Did you know that January is Teen Driving Safety Month? Each year, over 240,000 teens wind up in a hospital due to a car accident, with a larger than comfortable number being fatal incidents. To combat this issue, safe driving etiquette should be taught and reiterated whenever applicable. While there are obvious signs that you should be following, sometimes they can be overlooked. To combat the possibility of a lawsuit due to an accident or even worse, medical expenses, teach these tips to your fellow drivers.
- DON’T TEXT. While this one is repeated hundreds of times, it doesn’t hurt to tell them once more. Instead, remind them that unless it’s an emergency, it can wait. Sometimes they may feel as if they have to be immediately responsive to a message, or you will get mad. By telling them that their life is more important than an instant text back, they may understand and relax more.
- Keep distractions down. Teens love having fun in the car, but there’s a line to be drawn at some point. It’s not ‘uncool’ to tell their friends to stop jumping around, taking pictures, and being loud — it’s actually cool. The young lives surrounded by 3,000lbs of metal are much more important than a Snapchat to your BFF with the right lighting.
- Check Main Components. Before driving home at night, make sure all lights are in working order, and all tires are properly inflated. These small little changes can yield big results in response time, should something jump in front of the car, or an onset feeling of losing traction.
Should anything happen (which they sometimes do), an attorney is a critical role to play in personal injury cases. If you’re involved in an incident which includes your teen and are looking for an attorney, make sure you’re suited up with the best.
